Basic Linksys Router Setup with WPA Security


Open your web browser and log on to your linksys router

The default address for the router is http://192.168.1.1 Enter the password when prompted (the default password is: admin)


Change the router name and host name to your first initial and last name

Example: John Smith would be Jsmith

Change the domain to SPII.NET

Change the time zone to Eastern Time


Click the Save Settings Button



Click on the “Wireless” tab (notice the word WIRELESS is now highlighted BLUE)


Change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) to something you will recognize

I use my initials LM and add WIFI: LM-WIFI

Click the SAVE SETTINGS button.



Now Click on “WIRELESS SECURITY”


Change Securty Mode to WPA PERSONAL

Change WPA Algorithms to TKIP

Add a WPA SHARED KEY

It should be 8 characters long, and should contain some special characters such as !@#$%^&*()

WPA Shared Key Example: *2o08jE(-Wp_@

Click the SAVE SETTINGS Button.




Now Click on the ADMINISTRATION TAB


Change the PASSWORD, Yes enter it twice.


Click the SAVE Settings Button, You will be prompted for the new password when the screen reloads.





To connect using a notebook, or portable computer:


Open your wireless configuration utility.

Search for your wireless network.

Highlight the network you want to connect to and click the connect button




After Clicking connect you will be prompted for the security password,

Enter the same WPA Key that you used when setting up your Linksys Router



Notice that the wireless configuration utility shows that I am connected




If you don't know the password for your router, the perform a factory reset by holding in the reset button for 15 to 20 seconds, it can be found on the back of your router and is usually brown.


NOTE: You will need to use the WPA Shared Key to connect to the router from a wireless device. Such as a notebook/portable computer or game console.


The WPA Shared Key MUST Be entered EXACTLY as the configured in your router.


If you do not change the password anyone can log on to your router and change the settings.

Click the SAVE SETTINGS button, you will be prompted for the new password after the settings are saved.


You should configure your router using a computer that is plugged in or wired to the router using an Ethernet cable.
